Beyond Green Gables, you get to see the nature Montgomery described so eloquently. She neither had need to fictionalize nor exaggerate her descriptions.

Looking for Anne & Finding Maud at Green Gables Heritage Place, P. E. I.

August 21, 2016 by A Suitcase Full of Books 4 Comments

In search of “Kindred Spirits” and to experience first-hand the beauty of Prince Edward Island, Canada, as described by Lucy Maud Montgomery in her world famous, Anne of Green Gables series, I flew to P. E. I. to discover what it was about this place that the author found so compelling.

While I had hoped to visit Bryce, Zion, and the Grand Canyon National Parks during our trip, because Kanab, Utah is nearly central to all three, our short travel time did not allow it. Our hosts suggested that we could see some of Zion if we took the road through the park during our return…

Aaaand I’m back! Sorry for the long absence folks! I really have no excuse other than I was distracted by temporarily taking leave of my senses during which I started knitting a second sweater. I know I swore off ever knitting another sweater after the last one…but the photo in the pattern book was so…

These are the books that started it all! When I wa These are the books that started it all! When I was in elementary/middle school I read my way through a family friend’s collection of Famous Five books, borrowing a new one each week. You can’t buy them in the US and we didn’t have the internet then so I couldn’t just get my own copies. I loved them so much that when I learned Enid Blyton’s Kirrin Castle was based on England’s Corfe Castle, I decided I had to visit it one day. In 2015 I made that trip and consequently started the blog.
Our family friend is now cleaning out her house after the recent passing of her husband, and as her own girls haven’t taken this set of books, she asked if I would like to have them. This is possibly the best bookish gift I’ve ever/will ever receive! I’m so thankful she let me borrow them all those years ago, and I will cherish them again now.

You know I can’t resist a good British monarchy You know I can’t resist a good British monarchy story. I just finished listening to Spare and I have questions! 🤔
My Dad has a saying, “Don’t ruin a good story with the facts.” So on the face of it, this was an enjoyable listen. The story, whether true or not, was good and Prince Harry is a good narrator. I especially enjoyed getting Harry’s side of the story of famous moments I clearly remember seeing photos of in the news.

I did feel like much of the book was written from the perspective of a traumatized 12 year old that never got the help he needed, however the scene in which he claimed his brother thought the therapist was brain washing him gave me some hope that Harry’s made some progress in beginning to think for himself and leave relationships that are causing him pain.

However, the ending left me with serious doubts about the truthfulness of everything! After railing against paparazzi through the whole book, Harry never mentions that he decided to settle in a US state that has a law against paparazzi taking photos of public figures’ children! Which means as long as Harry has a child with him, the paparazzi have to leave him alone. AND furthermore, the scene of paparazzi taking photos of him and his children in the back yard of Tyler Perry’s house could not or should not have happened! This seems like an important detail to omit when this law, if Britain had one like it when he was a child, might have saved him from many of his youthful grievances! Why would you omit this??

So I guess I’d classify this book as historical fiction?

Had a great time tonight at the Mendenhall Glacier Had a great time tonight at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center Friday night Fireside chat because my 5th grade music teacher turned author, Annie Boochiever, was back in Juneau to talk about her book Fighter in Velvet Gloves!

And of course I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to get a signed print copy of the book because I’d read it via Kindle.

Elizabeth Peratrovich day is Feb 16th. Perhaps take the opportunity to learn more about her by reading this book and then check out the post on my blog for a virtual walk you can do from the comfort of your computer around Juneau to locations related to her.

Thank you @onesteelesister for the signed paper co Thank you @onesteelesister for the signed paper copy of your book!! Yay!!

If you graduated high school in the 90s and there wasn’t much to do in your town besides hoo in the car and drive, you’ll find this book super relatable! I loved it!

My one problem with it is that @onesteelesister added an epilogue rather than a sequel! I’m starting a petition here for the author to rescind the epilogue and write a sequel! Who’s with me??
