Myanmar in the Footsteps of George Orwell: Kara and Nate Cruise Vlog I

February 9, 2020 by Elizabeth Leave a Comment

Myanmar Cruise Vlog I

Travel vloggers Kara and Nate chartered Paukan Cruises’ Irrawaddy Explorer river boat in Myanmar for their group tour of November of 2019. In reserving a spot on the tour I selected one of the boat’s Orwell suites. This led me on an exploration of George Orwell’s connection to Myanmar, or Burma as it was called during his stay in the country. In this vlog, part I of our week-long Irrawaddy River cruise between Bagan and Mandalay, I discover whether reading Orwell and trying to walk in his footsteps is still relevant to visiting Myanmar today.

In prepping for the trip I read both Burmese Days by George Orwell and Finding George Orwell in Burma by Emma Larkin. Read my full thoughts on these two novels in the post below.

One thing I’ve found through my travels is that (nearly all) humans love for a good dog story. So here are three I’ve added to my dog’s bookshelf:
🐶 Patsy Ann of Alaska
📍Visit the statue of Patsy Ann on the cruise dock in Juneau, AK and pick up a copy of the book at nearby @hearthsidebooks
🐶 Catie Copley
📍Visit the @fairmontcopley in Boston, MA and ask the concierge for a copy of the book.
🐶 Greyfriars Bobby
📍Visit the statue of Bobby in the Greyfriars Kirkyard in Edinburgh, Scotland. Pick up a copy of the book at @toppingsedin.
