London Sherlock Holmes StoryTourist Guided Walk Review Vlog

Knowing I’d be severely jet lagged for a day or two after landing in London, I needed an activity that didn’t require me being anywhere at any set time and that I could give up on and return to my hotel to sleep if I felt so inclined. My solution: a walking tour via an app which I could do whenever I wanted, at my own pace, and even stop part way through and continue later if I wanted. As I’ve been following StoryTourist on Instagram for a while now, I decided this was the perfect time to finally try out one of their walks. Not only because their tours perfectly fit my parameters, but also because they are only available in select cities, and London is one of them! The app has three London walks, one in Copenhagen, Denmark, and the rest in cities across Sweden, as StoryTourist is a Sweden based company.

StoryTourist app-guided walks, tell you a story related to your location as you walk from point to point guided by your phone’s GPS and the in-app map. but not only that, it turns your walk into a game. At each stop along your walk you have to solve an interactive puzzle using your phone before the app will let you continue the story and thus your walk. Also, the app will only let you activate the part of the story related to the point in the walk when your GPS confirms that you are actively standing at the required location. So there’s no hearing the story or playing the game without physically moving. (Actually, thankfully it does give you the option to continue if you’re at least in the general vicinity of the required GPS location, because sometimes my phone had trouble recognizing I was where it wanted me to be!)

Out of the three London tours currently available in the app, I decided to do the Solve a case with Sherlock Holmes walk because I do like Sherlock Holmes stories and this tour would walk me through a story I wasn’t familiar with already, the case of the Blue Carbuncle. I did purchase The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle* in book form so I could read it after the walk, but I put off reading the story until after the tour so that I wouldn’t know who the culprit was before the story unfolded during my walk. I think this made it more fun.

I purchased the guided walk on the website and downloaded the content to my phone pretty easily before I left for my trip. I figured if I had time and wanted to do a second one I could use the wifi at my hotel to purchase and download another. Unfortunately I only had time to do the one StoryTourist walk, however next time I’m in London I plan to do the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde walk based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s book. And whenever I get to Copenhagen, Denmark I want to do the StoryTourist Little Mermaid walk.
