Seattle Coffee Shop Musings

August 14, 2016 by A Suitcase Full of Books 2 Comments

As Seattle is home of Starbucks, and I didn’t get my mug of tea before leaving for the airport this morning, caffeine seemed in order, so here are some musings while I sip my Breakfast Tea. I love to people watch. As I sit here in my airplane clothes (leggings, sweatshirt, jacket, Big Bang Theory…

Author Talk: Sharon Kay Penman Gave Me A Cupcake!

January 7, 2016 by A Suitcase Full of Books 10 Comments

I have been a fan of Sharon Kay Penman’s novels since before there was Facebook, and before every author had a blog. If you’d have told me then that thanks to social media I would one day not only meet the author that inspired me to choose history as a college major, but that she would hand me a cupcake for coming to her book reading, I would not have believed you.

I visited Columbus, Ohio, where I picked up the book My Life and Hard Times by James Thurber from the indepentent bookstore The Book Loft, visited the James Thurber house museum, and Thurber's grave, where a statue of his dog Muggs has been installed.

Thurber was the foremost humor writer of the 20th century and he has some very funny stories that take place in the house that is now a museum and one about his dog Muggs.

Visiting the home of James and Muggs Thurber in Columbus, Ohio
I went back to Prince Edward Island, Canada to stay at Dalvay by the Sea because of its Anne connection and instead had an early honeymoon!

Then I spent a week touring wedding venues, the Anne Museum and Green Gables, doing a little golfing, and having a professional photoshoot session.

Ok, story time… back when I worked at the librar Ok, story time… back when I worked at the library, there were three individuals who were so miserable that it seemed they’d made it their mission to make everyone around them more miserable than they were. While I worked on finding a new job to remove myself from this toxic work environment, I needed a way to cope with being there. SO, I went out and bought myself a sweatshirt that said LIFE IS GOOD across the front and spent $100 on cheerful, colorful desk supplies and optimistic statement posters. I made my cubical a cheerful haven, I wore my new sweatshirt nearly every day, and I also started changing the reference desk computer background to images with statements like “Good Vibes Only!” 😂 And when anybody tried to get me down I’d point at my sweatshirt and say, “yes, but life is good!” This wasn’t easy, I cried at home nearly every night, but I combatted negativity with positivity and optimism during the day and got pleasure out of watching my tormentors’ displeasure at my upbeat attitude.

Today I save that sweatshirt to wear on my toughest days, so it was time for a new LIG sweatshirt, which is why I’m excited to say I’ve been selected as an LIG ambassador this year! I LOVE the LIG Winnie the Pooh line of shirts and I’ll be wearing my new sweatshirt all the time now!

Please remember, life may be hard, but it can’t stay that way forever. With a little optimism, and possibly a lot of work, things will get better. And sometimes you just need a sweatshirt to literally remind yourself every day that Life is Good!

While in Columbus I followed the @ohioanalibrary l While in Columbus I followed the @ohioanalibrary literary trail to the @cartoonlibrary. There’s an entire library & museum dedicated to comics! I not only got to see original Calvin & Hobbes prints but I learned more than I thought there was to know about cartoons! 😲

A new blog post will be up about this tomorrow!

It’s easy to forget that Home is a place worth w It’s easy to forget that Home is a place worth writing about too. James Thurber’s short stories that take place in and around his Columbus, OH home are hysterical and helped earn him the fame as one of the best American humorists of the 20th century.

I’m so happy that I had the chance to not only walk through Thurber’s former house, but walk through the museum where so many of America’s great humor writers have visited, been month-long residents, and been named Thurber Prize finalists and winners.

James Thurber wrote a short story about the worst James Thurber wrote a short story about the worst dog his family ever owned. Muggs was known as “The dog that bit people,” but thanks to the story and the cartoon Thurber drew of his dog, Muggs has been memorialized at the Thurber’s family grave site in Columbus, OH with his own monument.

Are you visiting your closest independent bookstor Are you visiting your closest independent bookstore for #independentbookstoreday? What was the last independent bookstore you visited? I recently visited @thebookloft in Columbus, Ohio. It has 32 rooms of books, takes up a full city block, and you need a map to find your way around! It was so much fun getting lost in the maze of books and always finding myself in a new room filled with a different genre.
