A Purbeck Bus Expedition & Good Eats in Wareham

June 19, 2015 by A Suitcase Full of Books Leave a Comment

One of my favorite things about England is the double-deck buses. I love sitting in the front row of the top deck above the traffic and watching tree branches hit the front of the bus on narrow countryside roads. On the Isle of Purbeck, the best way to get around is either by taxi, or…

Enid Blyton and the Castles, Smugglers, and Caves of the Dorset Coast

June 14, 2015 by A Suitcase Full of Books Leave a Comment

Enid Blyton romanticized the Dorset coast’s light houses, castles, and quarry caves in her Famous Five novels.

Corfe Castle

Follow Author Enid Blyton to Corfe Castle

June 13, 2015 by A Suitcase Full of Books 8 Comments

My favorite childhood book series is Enid Blyton’s Famous Five mysteries. Ever since I learned that Enid Blyton’s inspiration for Kirrin Castle is actually Corfe Castle in Dorset, England, and in homage to the books, you can visit the real life Ginger Pop Shop in Corfe, I determined that one day I would go there.

Bryson Dorset

Author Footsteps: Bill Bryson was Right about Dorset

June 10, 2015 by A Suitcase Full of Books Leave a Comment

I wanted to spend my time exploring Corfe Castle, strolling along the path atop the white chalk cliffs, and finding out if Swanage was still just as Bryson had described.

IMAX, Harrods & Wicked, London

June 8, 2015 by A Suitcase Full of Books Leave a Comment

IMAX On our last day in London it rained all day. Far from being disappointed, I thought, “This is more like London.” We were all grateful that we had nowhere specific to be that morning, so over a late breakfast we brainstormed options for the day. Despite being used to rain, and having packed the…

I visited Columbus, Ohio, where I picked up the book My Life and Hard Times by James Thurber from the indepentent bookstore The Book Loft, visited the James Thurber house museum, and Thurber's grave, where a statue of his dog Muggs has been installed.

Thurber was the foremost humor writer of the 20th century and he has some very funny stories that take place in the house that is now a museum and one about his dog Muggs.

I went back to Prince Edward Island, Canada to stay at Dalvay by the Sea because of its Anne connection and instead had an early honeymoon!

Then I spent a week touring wedding venues, the Anne Museum and Green Gables, doing a little golfing, and having a professional photoshoot session.

The first stop on our Enchanted Book Club tour was The first stop on our Enchanted Book Club tour was Chawton House Library.

Jane Austen’s brother was adopted by wealthy relatives and inherited this estate. Jane used to come up to “the great house” for dinner while she lived in Chawton village. I like to imagine she spent time sitting in the dining room window alcove.

Today the house is a special collections library dedicated to women authors. Unfortunately you can’t take photos in the library room.

It also has a magnificent walled garden that gives Secret Garden vibes.

Jane’s mother and sister are buried next to the church on the Chawton grounds, but as Jane is buried in Winchester, a statue next to the church of Jane in a way brings her home to them.

While in London I also made my first visit to @dau While in London I also made my first visit to @dauntbooks! I think this might be the most instagrammed bookstore in London, with good reason. According to Wikipedia, it’s Edwardian architecture may be the first custom built bookstore in the world.
However, I wasn’t just there for the view. It’s also a travel themed bookstore. The books are organized by country! If I hadn’t been so jet lagged I would have spent longer poring over each section and picking at least one book per country for my TBR list. This is a bookstore I would love to have available every time I’m planning a new trip!

I only had a day in London so I decided to spend i I only had a day in London so I decided to spend it doing the @storytourist Sherlock Holmes interactive walking tour. The tour started in Hyde Park and ended outside the Sherlock Museum at 221B Baker St. The walk took me through the Sherlock Mystery The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle. As I walked from location to location, Dr. Watson gave me pieces of the story and at each stop there was an interactive puzzle to solve in order to continue.

I vlogged the adventure so I’ll have a video out eventually!

I’d never read this Sherlock story so I didn’t know who the culprit was ahead of time. But I wanted to read the story after the walk to see if it was the same as the one told for the tour so I visited Waterstones to pick up this new @penguinrandomhouse cloth bound edition that isn’t available in the US yet!

Then I went back to my hotel to read and sleep off the jet lag.

Hello London! It’s good to be back! Had to stop Hello London! It’s good to be back! Had to stop and say hi to Paddington Bear since Paddington Station is always my first stop after Heathrow. And I didn’t even mind waiting for my turn to take a photo with the statue because it was so fun seeing the delight on everyone’s faces that stopped to take a photo too.
