Misty of Chincoteague, Sea Star, Stormy, and Misty’s Twilight by Marguerite Henry
Misty of Chincoteague is the story of a small pony bought by two siblings, Paul and Maureen Beebe, at the annual Pony Penning Festival in Chincoteague, VA. The story is a fictionalized tale about a real horse the author bought from Paul and Maureen’s grandparents, Read the post The Truth About Misty and the Chincoteague Ponies to read more about the real Misty.
Sea Star is the story of a small orphaned pony found by the Beebe siblings. Misty has now become famous, thanks to the book Misty of Chincoteague, and two film men purchase her and take her away to film a movie based on the book. When Sea Star is found on Assateague Island, it turns out the cold needs the children just as much as they need the colt to take their minds off of their loss of Misty. This book too, is a fictionalized tale of a real pony.
Stormy, Misty’s Foal is a fictionalized version of history once again. In the book, Misty has returned to the Beebe ranch to birth a foal when a storm floods Chincoteague and causes the residents to evacuate the island. The real Misty did have a foal named for the 1962 Ash Wednesday storm that flooded Chincoteague and killed most of the Assateague pony herd. The real events, and people involved, however differ a bit from the book.
Misty’s Twilight is a fictionalized version of the story of a great granddaughter of Misty. Misty’s Twilight was was a real horse, owned by a Florida doctor, and became a show horse in dressage. The book takes place mostly outside of Chincoteague, but the beginning of the book starts with the Doctor taking her children to the Chincoteague Pony Penning Festival where they purchase Twilight’s mother, Sunshine. Anybody excited about attending a Chincoteague Pony Penning Festival and seeing descendants of Misty will recognize themselves in this book’s Dr. Sandy Price.
